As part of the Global Week on Action for Palestinian Political Prisoners (April 11-April 17, 2010), Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine invite you to learn more about the Palestinian struggle in relation to other struggles for freedom, justice and equality.

Bill Fletcher, Jr. will discuss Israeli Apartheid and Palestinian peaceful resistance to Israeli’s occupation, blockade, and systematic discrimination. In addition,he will debunk the notion that there is a lack of peaceful Palestinian resistance and draw parallels between the Palestinian movement and other historical movements for underrepresented groups struggling for justice and equality.

According to Mr. Fletcher, there is a frequent tendency to misrepresent Palestinian activists as extremists who threaten life and property. “Recent arrests of Palestinian human rights activists Jamal Juma’, Abdallah Abu Rahma, Ibrahim Amirah and Mohammed Othman are prime examples. While the Israeli government claims that it has no partner with which it can discuss peace, thousands of Palestinian activists that have consciously and openly repudiated armed struggle are sidelined and arrested as political prisoners. The “partners” are in Palestine.”

Bill Fletcher Jr. is the executive editor of BlackCommentator.com. He is a senior scholar with the Institute for Policy Studies, the immediate past President of TransAfrica Forum, and the co-author of “Solidarity Divided.”

Sponsored by Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine, with the Arab Student Association at SIPA, the Black and Latino Caucus at the School of Public Health, TURATH, the Muslim Student Association, LUCHA, the International Socialist Organization and Adalah-NY: The New York Campaign for the Boycott of Israel.
